When it is difficult to talk, people in your life need to listen patiently. Jennifer and Abby were increasingly comfortable in communicating with each other. Jennifer grew up having very few people listen to her and all too many others taking advantage of her inability to talk. Abby brought to her advocacy relationship with Jennifer a desire to increase Jennifer's abilty to communicate.
One way that Abby did this was to take Jennifer to a "Help America Get Out and Vote" gathering. For the first time in her life, Jennifer was given the opportunity to register and to learn how to operate a voting machine. Jennifer learned that she had special rights of access to voting venues. Abby amplified Jennifer's voice that day in a way that will reverberate throughout Jennifer's life.
